Best Headphones for DJ 2024

The best DJ headphones are an essential bit of kit, whether you are an up and coming DJ or you’ve already made it and are looking for new toys to play with. The primary concern with a good pair of closed back headphones is that they offer maximum sound isolation. So the DJs can monitor the headphones mix as they play, without the sound bleeding into the live mic and ruining the take.

A perfect pair of djing headphones provides enhanced lows and crisp highs. It’s the kick drums, snares, and hi-hats you’re paying attention to when mixing, not intricate sonic details. For headphone specs, here are some approximate guidelines:

  • Frequency range of 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz is the standard, you can go wider, but it’s not necessary.
  • Drivers that are 40mm or larger for louder lows.
  • For impedance, look for a model with a rating of 25 ohms or more.

DURABILITY

Over the head, around the neck, the one-hand-single-ear hold, DJs constantly twist and forcefully form fit headphones and a proper pair should be able to take the abuse (at least for a year or two). Check how strong the joints / hinges are and the quality of the materials used.

Comfort

However you wear them, DJ headphones should be comfortable. Check for headband padding, quality of the ear pads, and adjustability. Further, swiveling or rotating cups might provide better fit, and if you like to move around in the DJ booth, look for headphones with coiled and/or detachable cords.

Single Cord Design

If the headphones have two cords coming from the ear pieces, they’re not DJ headphones. DJ headphones always have single cord design for less tangles and booth accidents.

Folding Design

Do they fold into a portable shape? How easy is it to stuff them into your bag (with limited space) at the end of the night? Headphones that don’t fold tend to break during transport.

With so many options available, finding the best DJ headphones can be a complicated task.
You need a pair that can handle a beating and still be ready for a live performance the next day. This is because one of the most common issues DJs come across is their headphones breaking.

In this list, we’ve also made sure they’re all closed-ear headphones to ensure you get the best results.

1. Pioneer DJ Headphone HDJ-2000MK2-K

Pioneer DJ Headphone HDJ-2000MK2-K

These headphones are well-rounded in what they are able to deliver. Astonishing clarity, high-quality sound separation, and enough sound insulation when performing. They also boast a great level of comfort, which is definitely useful for when you’re playing those long sets and a cheap pair of headphones would cause discomfort.

Although they are beautiful and high quality, the general consensus is mixed here. It’ll definitely fall down to your preference simply due to the number of other headphones on the market and what you find valuable in a good pair of headphones. If you’re looking for high-quality sound, separation, and insulation with an ample amount of comfort, these are a good choice.

2. Sennheiser HD 25 Professional DJ Headphone

Sennheiser HD 25

Sennheiser prefers to focus purely on the audio quality rather than making it look fancy and comfortable. They come with a 2-year manufacturer warranty. This is useful if you’re a resident DJ because unless you are performing somewhere that pays obscenely well, and unless you’re among the likes of Martin Garrix, then you will definitely be thankful that you have that warranty. The different headband structure definitely makes for an interesting, unique look. High-quality sound packed into lightweight, compact pair of headphones. The HD 25 Pro is renowned for sound quality even at higher pressure levels.

3. Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Professional Studio Monitor Headphones

Audio-Technica ATH-M50x

Although not as good as others when it comes to bass and power, the M50x focuses on superior sound quality and clarity and it’s executed well. Also unlike some of the bigger and better headphones, you don’t need batteries to run the processor and there’s not a massive difference made to battery life. It has many above average features and is good value for money. No battery required. Velvet ear pads further increases comfort.

4. SOL REPUBLIC Master Tracks X3 Over-Ear Headphones

SOL REPUBLIC Master Tracks X3 Over-Ear Headphones

The 1601-32 has a minimalist look to it. The elegant simplicity approach does seem to pay off, with a decent amount reviews reporting great bass and vocals. One feature that does stand out here is the “virtually indestructible” headband. It comes with a 1,000 day guarantee which is almost 3 years. They have a snug fit, but some may find it a little too tight. If you like a little slack in the fit these may not be for you but if you want a fit that won’t see your headphones on the floor if you get a little too into the music, look no further.

Another aspect to consider with these is that they’re also great outside the DJ world. the clear vocals can be useful for phone calls and gaming.

 5. V-MODA Crossfade

V-MODA Crossfade

One big advantage to V-MODA headphones is the hex design and interchangeable shields, which is a big change from the “cookie-cutter” style headphones that most people tend to use. You can even get custom laser engraved hex shields for the side of your headphones.

Again, the LP features the dual diaphragm setup that V-MODA is known for, which gives an incredible level of sound quality not found elsewhere.
